The press, including ourselves, reported yesterday that Microsoft has plans to license the Xbox and Xbox 360 Operating System to third parties, for use in other multimedia devices. The reports stemmed from an article in the Japanese daily, Nihon Keizai Shimbun, and spread rapidly across the internet.
It now appears that these reports are not accurate and Microsoft has no plans, at least any time soon, to license the Xbox OS to thirds parties. Speaking to US videogames site, Gamespot, a Microsoft representative said: “To be clear, Xbox will continue to be manufactured exclusively by Microsoft,” and went on to say. “There’s certainly a potential for other hardware companies to manufacture Xbox some day in the future, but that is not something we’re focused on right now.“
So it appears those wanting a toaster, Xbox hybrid may have to wait as Microsoft has no imminent plans to license out the Xbox OS.
