The 900p resolution originally targeted for the Xbox One version of Diablo 3 was deemed “unacceptable” by Microsoft, according to Blizzard’s production director John Hight, prompting the developer to work directly with the platform holder to bump the resolution to 1080p.

“We did find it challenging early on to get it to 1080p,” Hight told Digital Foundry. “That’s why we made the decision to drop to 900. That’s what we demoed and were showing around E3 time. And Microsoft was just like, ‘This is unacceptable. You need to figure out a way to get a better resolution.’ So we worked with them directly, they gave us a code update to let us get to full 1080p.”

Blizzard released a title update to bump the resolution to 1080p earlier this week which, according to Digital Foundry, results in an “absolutely identical” image quality to that of the PS4 version.

However, the site also claims that the boost to 1080p has resulted in issues with the frame rate, with the Xbox One game said to occasionally drop from a locked 60fps to “the low 50s” following the new patch.

In fact, Digital Foundry goes so far to state that it would rather play the locked 60fps/900p version of Diablo 3 than the new “less consistent 1080p” version.

Digital Foundry’s article follows comments from Xbox head Phil Spencer last week who stated that “frame rate to me is significantly more important to gameplay than resolution”. Clearly there are others at Microsoft who disagree…

Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition launches on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 today.
