In an interview with Eurogamer, Microsoft’s corporate vice president, Mike Ybarra, spoke about the exclusivity of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on the Xbox One and he managed to answer all of the questions, by not really answering them at all.

EG asked Ybarra about the confusion surrounding the exact meaning of the use of ‘exclusive’ in relation to PUBG on the Xbox One and Ybarra responded, saying that, ‘We’re publishing it on Xbox and it’s a console launch exclusive. For anything else – we don’t like to answer on behalf of developers, so you’d have to ask Bluehole.’’

This is all, honestly, about as clear as mud and EG pressed on, asking if PUBG could launch on another console in the future, to which Ybarra responded, ‘You’d have to ask Bluehole’. Sensing that there wasn’t much being given away, EG attempted to clarify whether PUBG was just a ‘timed exclusive’. Ybarra remained resolute in his response, saying that ‘It’s up to Bluehole. We’re not the developer’.

The likelihood of PUBG coming to PS4 is high. It’s the biggest selling console this gen and surely Bluehole would want to maintain the sales momentum across all formats, wherever possible. Right now, it’s a wait and see situation. Clearly Microsoft wants the focus to be just on itself and will handle any questions on the subject like a molten-hot potato, but the unwillingness to just call it an exclusive is another big clue.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is due for a full release on PC in late 2017, followed by a ‘console launch exclusive’ release on Xbox One with Xbox One X enhancements.
