Nintendo has confirmed that Metroid: Samus Returns has loads of cool extras that you can unlock, provided you buy the four Metroid-themed Amiibo they’re selling. Yes, to unlock the newly added features, you’ll need to fork out at least £48 to gain access.

Metroid: Samus Returns is a 3DS remake of Metroid 2, and will launch with two new Metroid Amiibo figures, one of Samus and one of a Metroid. You can also use the two existing Smash Bros. Amiibo for Samus and Zero Suit Samus, if you can even find them at a reasonable price point anymore. They’re currently £10.99 each on the UK Nintendo store, but if you want the newer Amiibo then good luck, as they’re already sold out. Time to trade those organs you don’t really use.

The content the four Amiibo provide is split into bonuses for use in-game and extras that can be unlocked after beating the game once over. The Samus Aran Amiibo will grant you an extra energy tank as a bonus and Metroid 2 art gallery when you complete the game. The Metroid Amiibo will reveal every Metroid on the map, unlock the Fusion difficulty mode and also unlocks a Metroid Fusion skin when completing the game. The Super Smash Bros. Samus Amiibo gives the user an extra missile tank in-game and unlocks the Samus Returns concept art gallery on completion of the game. Finally the Super Smash Bros. Zero Suit Samus Amiibo gives the user (another) extra missile tank in-game and unlocks the Samus Returns BGM jukebox mode when the user completes the game.

Thankfully none of this stuff is essential to the experience, but completely removing features from the game like the hard mode, unless you manage to find/buy a specific Amiibo, really stinks, especially considering you used to get a lot of these features in previous Metroid games, without using an Amiibo. Hopefully this isn’t something that continues going forward. But gotta get paid, I guess.
