The brilliant stealth-action sandbox of Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is now available to play in online co-op.
After almost a decade of trying to get the game’s single-player campaign playable in multiplayer, modder unknown321 has managed to make the game available to play as a twosome.
Metal Gear Solid V co-op mod released
Released right here on GitHub, the mod is available now in a “semi-working state with some features missing” as well as some game-breaking bugs that can pop up during multiplayer sessions.
After many years of working on the project, modder unknown321 explained that they will have significantly less time available to keep progressing. While they won’t abandon the mod anytime soon, they cannot commit to the same level of development.
“I am running out of money and not in the position to fully commit to development like I did for the past,” the developer wrote online.
Nevertheless, the mod itself does lead to some brilliant co-op fun, even if the project itself is far from finished. Multiplayer clips have been shared online of the game’s co-op with one particular clip showing exactly why multiplayer is an amazing addition to the game.
One clip by Twitter user SSSiyan shows what happens when your co-op partner gets in the way. In the video, the player goes to take out an enemy soldier with a tranquilizer pistol, only to accidentally hit their friend straight in the head, causing them to pass out.
While the mod may introduce a wealth of issues into Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, it’s well worth trying out. Sure, the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater remake is coming with its own unique multiplayer mode, but there’s nothing like using MGS’ brilliant combat alongside a mate.
