Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater appears to feature a CQC takedown that was not featured in the original game. New footage from the Tokyo Game Show spotted by acclaimed MGS YouTuber, PythonSelkan, reveals Naked Snake ‘choke slamming’ an enemy soldier in a way we haven’t seen before.
The animation sees Snake first parry the enemy weapon away, before thumping them in the stomach with his other arm. Snake then pulls the enemy up by their neck and choke slams them on to the ground.
CQC, or Close Quarters Combat, is a backbone of MGS gameplay. Devised by Naked Snake and The Boss, CQC can be used to take down enemy soldiers quickly or quietly. As per the 2004 original, CQC also allows Snake to interrogate soldiers for information, such as nearby enemy patrols and loot locations. Encouragingly, all of the CQC animations we have seen thus far appear to be improved and are now far more realistic in Delta when compared to the original.
It’s worth noting, as always with footage of games prior to release, that things could change – but we wouldn’t expect something like this new takedown to not make the final cut.
Elsewhere, there’s been no Production Hotline for a couple of months now. Earlier in the year, Konami had an almost monthly cadence of their fan-focused series, in which they answered questions and gave the MGS community an update on progress. The latest news to come out from Konami was in the form of a cast-focused special hosted by Snake actor, David Hayter. In the clip, it was revealed that Eva’s actress actually used a pseudonym as she was involved in more child-friendly productions elsewhere.
Hayter also used his part of the production to share a message to fans. “I hope people can step into this world, old and new fans alike and feel as though they can take on anything, that they can take down their own personal Metal Gear, no matter what that means to them in their lives,” he said. “So, go forth and always remember, you’re pretty good.”
There’s still no concrete release date for Delta, despite the devs confirming the game is playable from start to finish. All eyes are now on Q1 next year, with the hope Delta drops sooner rather than later.
