Tribute Games’ Mercenary Kings, an old-fashioned, run-and-gun platformer with a twist, will be released for PS4 this winter, the developer has announced.

Whilst Mercenary Kings looks like a game from the ’80s and ’90s, it has been enhanced with what the developer calls a deep weapon and item crafting system.

There are more than 300 gun parts to mix and match, making it possible to enhance your weapon’s magazine capacity or forge an elemental blade that can freeze your enemy.

Players will be able to make their mercenary invulnerable to the enemy’s toxic weapons, or use an ingredient you’ve found to boost your mission skills. It’s a customisation system which has been likened to that usually found in an RPG.

Co-op multiplayer will also be present and correct, as will various connectivity options for PS4 and PS Vita, though these will be announced in the coming weeks.

Expect Mercenary Kings to launch for PS4 late this year or early in 2014.
