The Department of Justice has referred to the case as being “among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States”, alleging that the site has generated $175m in illegal revenue and caused half a billion dollars worth of damage to copyright holders.
An official statement from the DoJ states that charges have been filed against two corporations – Megaupload Ltd and Vestor Ltd – and seven individuals, led by site founder Kim Dotcom, who variously lives in Hong Kong and New Zealand.
Six other “members of the mega conspiracy” were also charged. Dotcom and three of his associates were arrested in New Zealand; the remaining trio, who are based in Slovakia, Germany and Estonia, have yet to be detained.
Law enforcement agencies have reportedly seized $50m worth of assets belonging to the accused. Innovation site VentureBeat states that the haul includes 15 Mercedes and other luxury cars with personalised number plates – including the titles “HACKER” “GOD” and “GUILTY”.
VentureBeat also reports that Anonymous shut down the web sites of the DoJ and Universal Music in response to the arrests.
Earlier this week it was revealed that MegaUpload’s new CEO is US rapper Swiss Beatz, who is married to Alicia Keys. Mr Beatz is not facing any charges, at present.
