Mass Effect 3 sold 1.3 million units during its first month on sale in the US, the NPD Group has told Joystiq.

This figure represents only physical copies sold, so does not include digital sales on both PC and PS3.

Last week Microsoft revealed that Mass Effect 3 shifted 943,000 copies on Xbox 360, stating its version outsold that on PS3 by a factor of 4:1.

EA, however, believes the physical sales figure doesn’t accurately represent the industry.

“We think the monthly NPD reports are a very poor indicator of the industry’s performance given the proportion of digital sales – including digital downloads via Origin, DLC, mobile and social games and much more – that are not captured in their reports,” John Reseburg of EA’s corporate communications told Joystiq. “Taking these reports as an accurate snapshot of the industry today is a dangerous assumption.”
