While the original Mass Effect featured a same-sex relationship for a female Shepard, the male version of the intergalactic space hero has never found himself fancying other boys in either Mass Effect 1 or Mass Effect 2.

Until now: Mass Effect 3 will feature same-sex love interests for both the guys and the girls.

“Happy to confirm #ME3 supports wider options for love interests incl. same-sex for m&f chars, reactive to how you interact w/them in-game=,” said BioWare’s Casey Hudson on Twitter.

BioWare has previously warned that the 70 per cent of players who cheated on their original Mass Effect 1 partner in Mass Effect 2 will suffer repercussions in the third game.

There will apparently be no new romance options in Mass Effect 3, so which one of the guys will Shepard find himself attracted to?

Mass Effect 3 will be released in 2012.
