At the Spike Video Game Awards over the weekend EA and BioWare confirmed the development of Mass Effect 3, showing a debut trailer which revealed a holiday 2011 release date.

The announcement followed a slip up on the EA Store which revealed plot details of the third game in the trilogy.

“Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race.

“As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.”

No mention of platforms was made during the announcement, but EA has since confirmed to IGN that the game will be available simultaneously on Xbox 360, PC and PS3.

The first two instalments in the Mass Effect trilogy had been exclusive to the Xbox 360 and PC, but the imminent January launch of Mass Effect 2 on PS3 will change that.

Given the franchise’s large Xbox 360 fanbase, we still expect the PS3 edition of Mass Effect 3 to come a distant second when sales are totted up, but there’s no denying that this is a major plus for Sony’s platform.
