Marvel Rivals developers recently released a video that explains how the in-game matchmaking works. Once again, NetEase emphasized that the game doesn’t use the EOMM, the system optimized for engagement. However, the matchmaking is still far from ideal, which is why we may get another big change.
Right now, the Marvel Rivals developer is considering implementing placement matches. This is something that the community has asked for for a long time, and we may finally see it come soon. This change would not only make matchmaking fairer, but it would also reduce smurfing, another big issue.
Placement matches may come to Marvel Rivals soon
With Marvel Rivals Season 4 launching on September 12, NetEase will add lots of new content once again. While the next hero is currently unknown, it will likely be a Vanguard or a Strategist. On top of this, the game developer will release more balance changes and gameplay tweaks.
One of the new features that could come is placement matches. Danny Koo, executive producer at Marvel Games, recently confirmed that the team is considering implementing this feature. According to his post on X (formerly Twitter), there is an ongoing debate regarding placement matches in Marvel Rivals, and the executive is “on the placement side of things.”

Adding placement matches certainly sounds like a great idea at the moment. Not only would it separate good players from average ones, but it would also make smurfing more difficult. With the launch of Season 4 and the rank reset, NetEase has a chance to implement this feature and see how it works out.
The next season may also bring the first original character in Marvel Rivals, although this could be a risky move for the game’s future.
