Marvel Rivals is a fantastic hero shooter starring some of the greatest superheroes ever to grace comic books and the big screen. Next year’s roster additions are already locked in, and the developer is looking to add more villains as playable characters. While we’re excited to see what characters get added, there have been accusations by some it has become a “gooner game” thanks to some of its designs. In response, the Marvel Rivals creative director swatted away the accusations, boasting skins and character designs are “well received by majority of players”.
Marvel Rivals director dismisses “gooner game” accusations
As relayed by Forbes, in an interview with Rivals Assembled, Marvel Rivals creative director, Guangguang, was asked, “how do you guys respond to people calling Marvel Rivals a ‘gooner game’?”.
Guangguang dismissed the accusation, saying that the designs are “inspired by classic comic themes, including some very outstanding skins”. The creative director specifically pointed to “Mantis and also Psylocke’s Vengeance,” asserting that “these all come from classic comic designs”. In addition, Guangguang stated that NetEase “create some more fashionable designs based on [the classic comics] to gain players’ appreciation”.
Aside from classic comics, the creative director added that “with the Squirrel Girl and the Krakoa Resort skin, these are actually designs based on real-world themes and the season’s storyline”. In instances such as these outfits, Netease try to “integrate the storylines from the season, including elements from Krakoa and blend popular elements from real life”.
Lastly, Guangguang said, “We create new designs based on that and I’m very grateful these designs have been well received by the majority of players”.
Regardless of whether you think certain skins and character designs are overtly provocative, there’s no denying they’re incredibly popular. Before debuting in S2, Emma Frost immediately became a fan-favourite thanks to her design involving quads as mighty as Galactus.
Both male and female fans enjoy the characters and skins, and the developer is clearly succeeding in their goal of creating designs that are aligned with the comics while also being visually appealing. Even several months after launch, Marvel Rivals is still recording over 110,000 24-hour peaks on Steam, which has as much to do with the fun gameplay as it does the amazing character designs.
Based on the creative director’s response, we can gather that NetEase are not taking the accusations too seriously and will continue to deliver the sort of designs that players enjoy.
In other Marvel Rivals news, the developer has called out EOMM and rigged match rumors, and the game is finally getting a long-requested feature.
