As one of the biggest multiplayer launches of 2024, Marvel is filled to the brim with millions of players. However, since release, some players have discovered that the free-to-play hero shooter will frequently lump them into lobbies with AI-controlled bots.
Alongside the worries of pay-to-win exploits, players have expressed their frustration at the sheer amount of bots in multiplayer matches. However, it seems that this feature only affects the game’s Quick Play mode.
Marvel Rivals bot system explained
After a deep investigation, Marvel Rivals player Ciaranxy took to the game’s official Reddit to detail how the game’s bot system actually works.
The player explained that bots will only be added to matches when using the game’s Quick Play feature. At the time of writing, AI-controlled characters are not present in Competitive games.
Furthermore, Marvel Rivals’ bot matches appear to be fixed. Matches consist of four human-controlled characters on the player side with two AI teammates and an entire team of bot opponents. All of these bots have level one profiles and also have “restricted access” accounts.
Through testing, the player discovered that, “after two consecutive losses, your chances of being put into a bot lobby in Quick Play are very high”.
The biggest issue with bot lobbies in Marvel Rivals is that leaving them does penalise the player. For those who don’t want to play against bots, they are forced to play competitive as leaving casual lobbies with obvious AI-teammates will strike their accounts.
For most of the game’s 20 million players, the addition of bot lobbies probably doesn’t matter all that much. Nevertheless, it is an annoyance for players who do notice the game’s reliance on AI enemies.
