Speaking to Wired News Rein said that he believes that to extend the life of a game some form of downloadable content is essential in maintaining the gamer’s interest. He also believes the criticism of patching console games – as has been happening for years on the PC – is not warranted.
“The downside is that people will say, “we’ve brought PC-style patching to console.” But that’s not a bad thing, to be able to fix something you didn’t get quite right, or create new types of gameplay,” said Rein.
Epic Games’ next game to hit stores will be Unreal Tournament 3 for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. On consoles the game will benefit from an installed hard drive, something Rein praised Sony for including with every PlayStation 3 – this is not the case with the two Xbox 360 SKUs.
“We will absolutely take advantage of the hard drive on UT3. So if you don’t have a hard drive on Xbox 360 and you want to get the most out of your UT purchase, think about getting one,” Rein told Wired News.
Unreal Tournament 3 is currently mooted for release in the second half of 2007.
