Nintendo has announced the May 25 release of Mario Strikers: Charged Football for the Wii. The game is based on Mario Smash Football for the GameCube and features a cast of Mario World characters including Mario, Luigi, Bowser and Peach.

One of the biggest new features in the Wii game is the inclusion of Wii-mote control, encouraging players to make instinctive physical movements to achieve the desired effect on the pitch. Basic control (movement and kicks) is carried out using the analogue stick and buttons on the Wii-mote and Nunchuck, but motion controls can be used to pull off additional moves: flick the Wii-mote to check the opponent and steal the ball or use the Wii-mote to perform breathtaking saves and pluck the ball from the air.

Also new to the Wii game is online play using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Take on players from around the world online or go head-to-head with up to three other players on a single console. Online matches can be Ranked where you’ll compete to climb a leaderboard, or Unranked where the game is just for fun.

The game will feature a host of teams, with each team captain having unique abilities and enhanced skills. These skills range from Mario’s ability to grow to massive proportions and trampling other players, to Peach taking a photo and freezing the opposition.

The game’s primary mode, Road to the Striker Cup, will see players compete to win three different cups with matches become increasingly more difficult. Players will be competing across a choice of 17 different stadiums, each with varying features, characteristics and challenges.

Mario Strikers: Charged Football is scheduled for release on the Wii across Europe on May 25.
