The game suffered from a rocky development journey, but from September 25, players on iOS and Android will compete for pole position with their favourite characters on global leaderboards. It’ll be free to play when linked to a Nintendo Account, and racers can earn Grand Stars by racing or firing off the featured pipe to unlock more drivers, karts, and gliders. Optional in-game purchases are incorporated for kart customisation features, just like a similar system to one of Nintendo’s previous mobile ventures, Animal Crossing Pocket Camp.
Fan favourite tracks will be returning to the game, along with City Courses. These are inspired by real world places like Tokyo and Paris, and will rotate every fortnight. Some characters will go native, and wear outfits that match the city. They will also be host to special events, and Bonus Challenge courses will reward objectives like ‘Vs. Mega Bowser’ and ‘Goomba Takedown’.
I was beastly at Mario Kart Wii, and despite my office-centric Pokémon Go campaigning, I think I’ll give it a rest and give this a try. Its one finger control scheme might prove tricky on wobbly tube journeys, though. Mario Kart Tour will release on September 25. Watch a new gameplay trailer below.
