A new Mario Kart 8 exploit known as Fire Hopping has split the game’s Time Trial community, with some calling for Nintendo to patch out the technique.

Fire Hopping enables racers to maintain speed boosts for longer by hopping, as you can see in the video below.

The future of Fire Hopping is surely in Nintendo’s hands. If allowed to remain then any player wishing to post a fast time must adopt the technique. We’ve contacted Nintendo UK for its stance on Fire Hopping. Let us know what you think should be done in the comments below.

Controversial exploits aside, Nintendo is apparently pretty pleased with the launch performance of Mario Kart 8, which sold 1.2 million copies over its first weekend. Not only has the game sold faster than any other Wii U game, but it has boosted Wii U console sales too.

In the UK the game charted at No.2, behind Watch Dogs from Ubisoft. The launch helped boost UK Wii U hardware sales by 666 per cent over the previous week – 82 per cent of Wii U console sales were attributed to the Mario Kart 8 bundle.
