The sequel to one of Zynga’s most successful social games is under-performing after a drop of over 900,000 players over the last month.
Research firm AppData has stated it estimates the game has lost roughly 36 per cent of its userbase, while sources told Bloomberg the game failed to reach its expected sales.
According to industry analyst Michael Pachter, Zynga’s games typically see 20 per cent of its players on a daily basis, while Mafia Wars 2 only sees 10 per cent of players show up as regularly, Kotaku has reported.
He explained: “All the old Mafia Wars guys who finished everything you could do came over here and said, ‘This is the same game with different missions.’ They are already tired of it, so they are dropping off. I think it’s a good case study for what can go wrong.”
At its initial launch, users signing up for Mafia Wars 2 peaked at 2.5 million.
