A third entry in 2K’s Mafia series is in development for next-generation platforms, a new report has claimed.

According to a Eurogamer Czech source (and translated by Google), Mafia III is “in an early stage” of development at 2K Czech and “will appear sometime later” in the life cycle of the next-generation Xbox and PlayStation.

The game won’t be revealed during next week’s Gamescom, the report claims.

The report goes on to suggest that the game could have been in development for current-generation platforms before being moved to next-gen.

Mafia II released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC in 2010 following multiple delays.

Following a stronger than expected launch, parent company Take-Two said it was “very proud” of the title.
