LucasArts promises ‘less and better’ Star Wars games

LucasArts intends to make “less and better” Star Wars games in the future, the company has told VideoGamer.com.

Speaking at a Star Wars: The Force Unleashed event in London last week, Cameron Suey, the producer in charge of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game, admitted that some Star Wars games “probably weren’t up to the quality bar that we would have liked” but that LucasArts was now focused on telling “singular, excellent Star Wars stories with engaging and innovative gameplay and cutting edge technology”.

While there have been some classic games in the Star Wars video game franchise, including the Knights of the Old Republic, Dark Forces/Jedi Knight and X-Wing series, there have been some absolute stinkers, too, including the abysmal PlayStation beat-em-up Masters of Teras Kasi and mind-numbingly boring Xbox action game Star Wars: Obi-Wan.

Suey explained the stinkers by saying that LucasArts “got a little excited” by the Star Wars license in the past, but reassured gamers that that it’s something the company “recognised and understood”.

Suey said: “Star Wars is one of the greatest licenses for a video game you could have and in the past we got a little excited about that and we put out games that probably weren’t up to the quality bar that we would have liked. That’s definitely something we’ve recognised and we understand. The more Star Wars games you put out and the more you love that environment the more it becomes mediocre and anodyne. We’re really focused on telling singular, excellent Star Wars stories with engaging and innovative gameplay and cutting edge technology. That’s going to be the future of Star Wars games.”

When asked if gamers could expect less Star Wars games in the future, Suey replied: “You’ might see less and better. Make it right and do it right.”
