Speaking to VideoGamer.com about the possibility of licensed cars in Ridge Racer: Unbounded, Bug Bear producer Laasko Jonaas was quick to dismiss the idea.

“No,” he said, “that’s never been a part of Ridge Racer – we’ve never done licensed cars – apart form SEGA Rally – it just didn’t feel like a good fit. I think that you could actually do harm to the game, because Ridge Racer is all about the fantasy, and we don’t want to ground it too much in reality or it becomes something quite different.”

Now that Ridge Racer is becoming an umbrella for many racing titles, we asked whether Jonaas would ever like to see licensed cars in future Ridge Racer games.

“I wouldn’t want to see it, no,” he answered firmly.

While Bug Bear has been given the creative reins to do what it wants with its westernised Ridge Racer reboot, it seems the fantastical cars are one of the few things that will remain unchanged.

The good majority of racing games feature licensed cars. It’s actually quite nice that Ridge Racer keeps an element of individuality in being able to offer its own vehicles.

While the direction Ridge Racer: Unbounded is heading seems to have upset the RR fan-base, they can take solace in the fact that the universe won’t be ruined by licensed cars. It could be, however, that less loyal fans would actually like to see Audis, Ferraris and Bugattis. Hit us up with your thoughts below.
