Lego Universe will make a free-to-play trial available to potential players in an update this August, according to the LEGO Group.

The trial will give users limited access to the full set of features in the MMOG, including: “two adventure zones and one player property area for building their own virtual LEGO models”.

Subscribers on the other hand can access all adventure zones, instances, and property worlds, along with access to competitions and community events by purchasing game time.

LEGO Group will also be making the game available for digital download and do away with retail discs.

Free to play trials are now standard fare for most MMOs attempting to carve out a place in the market, and can work wildly in favour of the game. Lord of the Rings Online in particular tripled revenue when they offered a free-to-play option.
