As we get closer to the release of the first episode of Life is Strange: Before the Storm, Deck Nine Games has shared another video that gives more insight into the development of Chloe’s character for the game, following a traumatic experience in her life. It’s all rather angsty, deep and insightful.

In the video Ashly Burch and Rhianna Devries, the original voice actor for Chloe and her voice actor for Before the Storm respectively, share their thoughts on playing Chloe at different times in her life. Devries discusses how she tried to approach the role of Chloe, concentrating on the ‘rawness’ and ‘pain’ of the character, ‘I think just the rawness of her hurt and her pain is what makes her such a… dynamic character’.

Burch voiced Chloe in the original series of Life is Strange, and is a writing consultant for Before the Storm. Understandably Burch is pretty knowledgeable on how the part should be portrayed, saying that ‘Chloe is a compelling character because she’s pretty wounded in a lot of ways’. Burch worked with Devries to ensure the level of performance and the emotion of the character sets the scene and tone for the Chloe we played in the original game.

Before the Storm’s lead writer Zak Gariss positively gushes over the input of Burch in the creation of the story, saying, ‘Working with Ashly has been awesome, she has a viewpoint on who Chloe is, what she’s like, how she relates to the other characters of Arcadia Bay’.

Gariss emphasises the need for creating a bond between Chloe and Rachel, saying ‘each girl desperately needs kinda, something that only the other person can provide at this specific moment in time’. Chloe and Rachel’s relationship has a huge impact on Chloe, but we see her downplay it a bit in the original series.

The first of three episodes of Life is Strange: Before the Storm is titled ‘Awake’ and will release on August 31 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
