A new King Kong video game is on the way as part of Legendary’s ongoing MonsterVerse. Dubbed Kong: Survivor Instinct, this new adventure game puts you in the role of a dad looking for his daughter while everyone’s favourite monkey does all of the cool stuff.
What is Kong: Survivor Instinct?
Set after Godzilla vs. Kong, Survivor Instinct puts you in the role of a father looking for his daughter, Stacy. Announced for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, the game is a side-scrolling adventure game where you jump, beat and shoot your way through a series of bland, grey environments.
Over the course of the game, you’ll encounter numerous monsters, aka Titans. The titular King Kong will be there to either help or hinder your progress as well as unique Titans. In the game’s debut trailer, a massive bug creature can be seen, but it’s not the MUTO from Godzilla 2014. In fact, there’s no Godzilla to be seen at all.
While more interesting than 2023’s abysmal Skull Island: Rise of Kong, Survivor Instinct looks like another shocking entry into the MonsterVerse’s video game library. Essentially, it appears to be a shoddier, uglier Deadlight, a game that came out on the Xbox Live Arcade twelve years ago.
Hey, Where’s Godzilla?
Kong: Survivor Instinct is only focusing on one side of the MonsterVerse’s iconic duo. Considering the cinematic universe has largely focused on both Godzilla and Kong, it’s bizarre that only the latter stars in the MonsterVerse games. However, that’s likely because Godzilla’s rights holders Toho have some bar of quality that must be met.
As it stands, Kong: Survivor Instinct doesn’t look like anything to write home about. On the other hand, fans of kaiju games—myself included—will likely enjoy the slop being slid our way. Yum, please, sir, may I have some more?
