PES 2009 for Wii will be hitting stores on March 26 and the new game will offer a host of enhancements over last year’s debut Wii effort.

The innovative Point and Drag control scheme first used in the 2008 edition on Wii will return with enhancements said to make defending and shooting more instinctive. Players will use the Nunchuck or the Wii Remote to control the player on the ball, while they pick the player to pass to or send them on runs into space. Konami also notes that refinements should provide players with improved close control.

PES 2009 will also allow players to use either the Classic Controller or the Wii Remote held sideways. Choosing either of these control methods will see the game revert to the classic PES controls found in other versions of the game. In multiplayer sessions, mixtures of these control options will be allowed, allowing a Point and Drag player to face off against a classic controls player.

The Wii game will also feature the official UEFA Champions League license, with the European club competition accessible as a stand-alone game mode. The Champions Road mode has also been expanded. This year’s edition will also see the introduction of the Master League mode for Wii players. Here players are put in charge of a lowly team and must take them to the top, signing new players and winning cups and league competitions.

PES 2009 on Wii will also boast a greatly improved online mode, allowing up to eight players to head online – two Wii consoles, each with four players. The game’s Match Mode and Champions Road will also allow players to import their Mii avatars.

PES 2009 for Wii is scheduled for release in Europe on March 26. Check out the new features in video form right here.
