Video game legend Hideo Kojima has predicted a “future without platforms”, echoing similar predictions from other high-profile developers including Too Human creator Dennis Dyack and God of War creator David Jaffe.

At a Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker press conference in Tokyo, Kojima predicted: “In the near future, we’ll have games that don’t depend on any platform.

“Gamers should be able to take the experience with them in their living rooms, on the go, when they travel – wherever they are and whenever they want to play. It should be the same software and the same experience.”

Kojima’s comments are interesting not least because of his dedication to making games on video game consoles – traditionally Sony-made consoles.

According to a report from news agency Reuters, Kojima said he hoped the release of Peace Walker on Sony’s PSP handheld would give his development team a sense of what works in portable gaming in preparation for his vision of gaming on demand over the Internet.

“I looked at this in part as an experiment aimed at the future,” he said.

Some developers have suggested “cloud computing”, which allows gamers to play games through a device while processing is handled on a server, is the future of the games industry.

The OnLive video game service, debuted at the Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco last year to much excitement, is one attempt to realise cloud computing.
