Hideo Kojima is “contractually forbidden” from talking about the circumstances surrounding his exit from Konami, according to a report from US news outlet The New Yorker.
Kojima is rumoured to have split from the company following an alleged “fallout” between himself and upper management, although details of that have never been made clear.
On Wednesday, Kojima confirmed that his “employment contract with Konami [had] been terminated”, before announcing details of his new studio Kojima Productions.
Konami has yet to comment on his exit.
Moving to an independent studio will give Kojima the opportunity to create what he wants “with much more speed”, he adds, free of corporate red tape.
“When working in big companies, especially Japanese companies, every little thing has to be approved beforehand, and you need paperwork to do anything,” he told The New Yorker. “Now that I’m independent, I can do what I want with much more speed. I don’t need to invest time in unnecessary presentations. I shoulder the risk.
He continued: When I was in a company, my personal statements could be taken as the over-all direction of the company. As such, I couldn’t say just anything.”
Kojima announced a partnership with Sony on Tuesday to make his next game a PS4 console exclusive. The game will later arrive on PC.
