Good news for Kingdom Hearts fans: development on a third game in the series is underway.

But there may be some wait. Square Enix game designer Tetsuya Nomura, who was the main character designer on the recently released Final Fantasy XIII, said Kingdom Hearts 3 “depends on” Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Speaking in an interview translated by Heartstation.org, Nomura said: “About the next title, Kingdom Hearts 3 depends on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but development of the next title is already underway.

“There are two titles other than Kingdom Hearts 3 in conception, and I think I’ll release one within this year.”

Kingdom Hearts, the much-loved role-playing series that features Disney characters, hasn’t seen a main game release since Kingdom Hearts 2 in 2006.

Nomura also revealed a few titbits on the future of the series.

“The series won’t end in Kingdom Hearts 3, more like the conclusion of the Xehanort saga,” he said.

“It’s not the case that when Sora’s [Kingdom Hearts’ main character] story is over another hero’s story will begin; Sora will be the hero until the end.”

Nomura’s a busy man. He’s working on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Final Fantasy Agito XIII, and two unannounced titles.
