Following on the heels of GAME.co.uk, leading online retailers Amazon.co.uk and Play.com have stopped accepting pre-orders.

Amazon is asking interested customers to sign up to a mailing list to be notified when stock becomes available.

“As you may know, this product can sometimes be in great demand, and there can be shortages of this product across the UK,” explains Amazon.co.uk on the Kinect product page. “In an effort to provide as many customers as possible with the opportunity to purchase it, we are limiting the total number of units that can be purchased. As a result, each household may only purchase five units.”

It’s a similar story at Play.com.

“Supplies of this product are extremely limited and are under allocation by Microsoft. Therefore, we cannot guarantee to ship your order for launch. Orders of Kinect including Kinect: Adventures! are strictly limited to one per customer.”

MCV reports that launch stock for Kinect is “significant” and the device is not selling out because of stock issues.

Until firm info on launch stock is available it’s difficult to assess the popularity of Kinect. Taken on face value, though, Microsoft appears to be on track for a very successful release window – Kinect could be the new Wii.
