The chances of a Just Cause movie being made will increase if Hitman: Agent 47 is a success at the box office, producer Adrian Askarieh has told IGN.

“We’re close,” said Askarieh when asked about the status of the Just Cause film. “The bigger [Hitman: Agent 47] is, the easier that becomes.”

The interview was conducted before the Hitman movie opened, and the news isn’t too great for Just Cause fans. Hitman: Agent 47 has made approximately $64 million worldwide thus far on a production budget of $35 million (according to Box Office Mojo), which doesn’t leave much in the way of profits once you consider additional costs such as marketing.

International ticket sales often see a lower return for distributors, too. In the US Hitman has made only $20.5 million.

However, all isn’t lost if the movie can be made on a modest budget, added Askarieh.

Askarieh is also a big fan of the game series, put points to the upcoming third entry as finally offering a meaningful story.

“I think the first two Just Cause (games), you’re only doing because it’s cool. But this one [Just Cause 3, the game] has a cool story,” he explained. “I’ve always loved the story of the Scorpion, because I haven’t seen a movie about a guy you send in to tear people apart from within and then he has to make a conscious decision whether what he’s doing is just or not and based on that his entire belief system changes.”

Just Cause 3 launches December 1 for PS4, Xbox One and high-end PCs. Pre-order the game now from Amazon.
