Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams has announced plans to venture into video game development with the newly-formed Bad Robot Games.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Abrams' new outfit plans to cobble together both large-scale and indie titles spanning mobile, PC, and consoles.
Brain Weinstein, president and COO of Bad Robot, revealed plans overnight that the studio is partnering with Chinese media juggernaut Tencent to launch its own games division. Tencent has its fingers in many pies, and owns Riot Games (League of Legends) and even has stakes in Epic Games.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will also be involved as a minor investor.
Bad Robot Games confirmed that it will utilise in-house talent to work on its various game projects, including visual artists, designers, and writers.
'I’m a massive games fan, and increasingly envious of the amazing tools developers get to work with, and the worlds they get to play in. Now we are doubling down on our commitment to the space with a unique co-development approach to game making that allows us to focus on what we do best, and hopefully be a meaningful multiplier to our developer partners,' commented Abrams.
Abrams is currently working on Star Wars: Episode IX and also produced this year's Mission: Impossible Fallout.
