Jeff ‘Jeff from the Overwatch team’ Kaplan has given a Happy New Year developer update for Blizzard’s juggernaut of a hero shooter, and revealed that the team is ‘well along the path on Hero 27.’

Overwatch got three new heroes in 2017 and it looks like the roster will only continue to grow, at least for 2018, as Jeff says the team is thinking about heroes ‘beyond hero 27’ as well.

Jeff from the Overwatch team described the upcoming hero as awesome and ‘very needed’ and said that the character is currently in internal testing. There’s no planned release date right now, but Jeff says that’s less important to the team than getting the hero right.

The animated shorts and comics will continue for 2018, exploring the storyline of the Overwatch team being recalled as seen in the amazing Rise and Shine and Honor and Glory shorts. Another significant addition is the mention of a ‘ton of new content’ being added to the base loot boxes – we don’t know what that is, exactly, but Jeff said he hopes that will be coming later this month.

The dev update video also mentions new maps, as well as improving competitive play in Overwatch, and Jeff mentioned the Year of the Dog event will have some ‘pretty significant content’ (pray for dog cosmetic skins). 2018 will also see the return of the Uprising event, and more celebrations for the game’s anniversary.
