If you’ve ever played Morrowind and wished it was actually a completely different game, this new mod might be for you. Bethesda’s best Elder Scrolls game has been twisted from its immersive first-person, real-time view into a classic isometric CRPG with spectacular results.
OpenNevermind is the mod in question, built for the fan-made Open Morrowind engine. Originally developed as an April Fool’s joke, this twisted version of Bethesda’s 24-year-old masterpiece has “turned out to be actually playable”.
OpenNevermind turns Morrowind into Baldur’s Gate
Created by modder Petr Mikheev, OpenNevermind isn’t just a slap dash camera mod for the aging Elder Scrolls game. Mikheev’s mod not only adds full CRPG-like controls, allowing you to click around the world to move and interact like you would in the OG Baldur’s Gate games.
However, the mod has recently been massively improved by Elder Scrolls YouTuber Mehrunes Mike. In a recent video, the YouTuber not only showed off the mod, but also added his own improvements including a dedicated UI with hotkeys to truly replicate the feeling of classic BioWare RPGs.
There are still issues with taking Morrowind and slapping it into an isometric perspective however. For one, there’s no camera rotation so you can’t swivel your view to get a better look at an environment.
However, the biggest issue with the isometric-style mod is that it lacks any form of occlusion on objects near the camera. For example, very early in Mehrunes’ video, a huge tree blocks their entire view and it can be very hard to tell where the character is in denser parts of the environment. As you can also expect, the height issues also make fighting Cliff Racers even more annoying.
Nevertheless, this is a truly awesome way to play The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, and it shows that fans are still cooking up brand-new experiences more than 20 years after its release. Here’s hoping we can get an isometric Skyrim mod before The Elder Scrolls VI releases.
