A defect in the touch panel of the iPhone 5 may delay its release, it has been claimed – potentially ensuring that your family won’t go hungry next month.
Apple’s latest super-expensive consumer gadget is supposedly due to be revealed at a media briefing on October 4, with a release rumoured for later in the month. But now, as reported by DigiTimes, it seems that the plan may be scuppered by a problem with the touch panels.
Wintek, the company that produces the panels, insists that its wares will be delivered on time. But sources claim that the problem will make it hard for Apple to reach its shipment targets.
Only 20 to 25 per cent of iPhone 5 touch panels are produced by Wintek, with the rest being handled by a firm called TPK Holding
DigiTimes states that the “delayed bubble” defect is tricky for manufacturers to avoid, as it can only be detected during a late stage of assembly.
Apple expects to ship 25 to 26 million iPhone 5 units during the last quarter of the year, the sources claim.
If the phone is delayed, at least you’ll be able to feed your kids / pay your bills / not bore the rest of us to death by endlessly mouth-farting about your shiny consumer plaything.
(I have an HTC Desire; it’s cheaper but it breaks a lot. Go figure.)
