Focus Home Interactive has announced Insurgency: Sandstorm, a new version of the hit online shooter series heading to PC and consoles in 2017.

Developed by the original game’s creators New World Interactive, the game promises to deploy players “into a gritty, visceral combat experience that delivers first-person gunplay as immersive as it gets”, with support for team-based online multiplayer and a brand new story mode set within the Middle East.

Exact console platforms have yet to be announced, but expect it to at least arrive on PS4 and Xbox One.

“We are very excited about working with Focus on Insurgency: Sandstorm,” said New World Interactive’s founder Jeremy Blum. “We believe there’s a great opportunity for Insurgency on next-gen consoles and that aligning with a strong publisher will allow us to best leverage this. Considering our background, it was not easy finding a publisher we felt compatible with. We decided to work with Focus because they understand our game and they believe in our vision. In addition, they bring a wealth of knowledge when it comes to shipping console games and marketing to that audience.”

“We are very proud to partner with American studio New World Interactive,” added Focus Home Interactive president Cedric Lagarrigue. “Insurgency is one of the most praised and played First Person Shooters on PC. We are excited to support NWI in this new adventure, and we will do everything we can to make Insurgency: Sandstorm a hit on consoles and PC in 2017.”

The original Insurgency has sold over 2.3 million copies since launching on PC in 2014, Focus says, with the game having been likened to online shooters Call of Duty, Counter-Strike and Red Orchestra.

The first screenshots of the new game have yet to be revealed.
