Massive have already worked with Ubisoft and Vivendi and this deal with SOE will see billboard ads appearing in the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter. The ads appearing in the game world are yet to be announced, but Sony says that the revenue from the ads will help to fund community development and new features.
I am all for in-game advertising if it helps to keeps the cost of games down, especially with spiralling development costs on the next-gen consoles. However, we don’t want our games ruined by ads and product placements around every corner. It is a much debated topic and something that is bound to be talked about even more in the next few years.
