NES duo and Smash Bros. veterans The Ice Climbers have been cut from both the Wii U and 3DS versions of the latest brawler, thanks to a lack of power on Nintendo’s portable.

In an interview with Famitsu (via NintendoEverything), series creator Masuhiro Sakurai explained that the lack of hardware power on the 3DS meant the characters had to be cut from both versions of the game, as they share the same character list.

As a new Ice Climbers game is unlikely, the decision to cut them from the final roster was easy to make for the team.

Sakurai also addresses the issue of release dates, citing debugging as the main reason between the Wii U version arriving later. Had both games required launching at the same time, they could have been pushed back until next year.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS launches October 3, while the Wii U version is due some time later this year.
