Responding to a question on Twitter, asking whether a sequel to Freedom Fighters could ever see the light of day, IO Interactive replied that it’s definitely something the team would be interested in doing, but is focused on Hitman: Absolution for the time being.

“It’s definitely something a lot of us are interested in doing. But right now, the focus is on Hitman: Absolution.” says the Tweet.

Freedom Fighters was a third-person shooter for PlayStaiton 2, GameCube and Xbox back in 2003. As Christopher Stone, a plumber-turned American Resistance movement leader, the player takes on the might of the Red Army that has invaded and occupied New York City. The game received favourable reviews, and fans have been clamouring for a sequel ever since.

IO Interactive is currently hard at work on Hitman: Absolution, which Neon saw during E3. “One thing’s for sure: Hitman has changed, and from here there’s no turning back,” he said in his preview, slightly concerned about the new direction of the game.

Hitman: Absolution is due for release in 2012. Given the team’s enthusiasm for Freedom Fighters, perhaps IO Interactive will line up a sequel for its next project.
