The steep cost of developing games for the PS3 and Xbox 360 is pushing studios towards the casual sector. That’s the opinion of Arc System Works’ Daisuke Ishiwatari, creator of the Guilty Gear series.
“Nowadays if you target the high-end consoles like the PS3 and the Xbox 360, it costs a serious amount of money,” said Ishiwatari, speaking to VideoGamer.com last week. “Making a good business model for these consoles is really difficult. That’s why developers are going for casual gaming – to make it easy to find a business model.”
Ishiwatari also expressed concerns that the industry may be suffering as a result of market saturation.
“There’s a Japanese saying… I’m not sure about the English, but it’s, ‘Too much is too much.’ There are a lot of technologies and rules and hardware and software. There’s too much in the market, and it’s kind of being spoiled.
“For example, in the music industry there are too many artists at the moment. Only a handful are well-known, and the rest are not. The games industry is the same.”
Arc System Works is best known for its hardcore titles, including the BlazBlue series and the recent Hard Corps Uprising, which was published by Konami.
