Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds 2 looks to be an immense improvement over the original game. While the game’s egregious $80 price tag is still an issue, Obsidian has worked to combine Fallout New Vegas perks with Deus Ex style immersive sim elements and, surprisingly, Halo gunplay.
Halo devs helped make The Outer Worlds 2
While Halo Studios, the newly reforged and rebranded 343 Industries, is toiling away on its Unreal Engine 5 Halo: Combat Evolved Remake for release in 2026, the studio has also been assisting Obsidian to create much better gunplay for its upcoming RPG.
Just like DOOM developer Id Software did for Bethesda Game Studios’ Fallout 4, Halo Studios has been assisting Obsidian with the gun combat in The Outer Worlds 2. Speaking to The Guardian, game director Brandon Adler explained that the team had a back-and-forth with the flagship Xbox studio to make combat actually fun.
“We talked to the Halo folks,” Adler explained. “They gave us a huge list of stuff and said, ‘You guys should target this… you should add that to your weapon configurations.”
Adler explained that The Outer Worlds 2 gunplay was inspired by Halo and Bungie’s Destiny with the team doing “a full breakdown on Destiny, because we love how that felt”.
The Halo team’s work on The Outer Worlds 2 went weapon-by-weapon across the RPG, helping the team to realise their wish of having weapons feel unique. While Obsidian’s RPG will have more weapons than a sandbox arena shooter like Halo, the team still wants weapons to feel as unique as possible.
“We didn’t want small changes,” the game director said. “Every weapon feels very different; every weapon has a cool, unique purpose. You can even take those weapons and add mods on to them to do all kinds of crazy things.”
The Outer Worlds 2 is set to release on Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5 on October 29, 2025 with the game launching on October 29, 2025. There’s no word on a Nintendo Switch 2 port of the game, but Microsoft’s announced support of the new handheld could mean a portable version of the game could be on the way.
