At 1PM GMT today the Halo 3 multiplayer beta kicks off for those with access (either via a code or most likely a copy of Crackdown), and it’s now been announced that in just over four months the full game will hit store across the world.

Halo 3 is the final chapter in the record breaking Halo trilogy; the second game generated a staggering $125 million in sales within the first 24 hours. Three years on and Halo 2 is still the most played game on Xbox Live, with around 1 billion hours logged by its players.

‘Halo 3’ is much more than a video game release; it’s the biggest entertainment event of the year,” said Peter Moore, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business. “On Sept. 25, we intend to deliver a finale that will go down in entertainment history and leave people around the world with an experience that will be shared and enjoyed for years to come.

Halo 3’s worldwide launch begins on September 25 and will release in Europe on September 26.
