Those of you wondering where 10-out-of-10 blockbuster Halo 3 is from BAFTA’s 2007 awards nominations fear not; Microsoft is entering the sci-fi FPS in next year’s instead.
Although it might appear strange to some, BAFTA (The British Academy of Film and Television Arts) allows publishers to enter games on an 18 month basis, from Q4 to December the following year.
That means that games like Gears of War on Xbox 360, which has five nominations, and Wii Sports, which leads the way with seven BAFTA nominations, are in the hunt this year despite being released in late 2006.
It also means that games that haven’t actually been released yet are included in the list, like hotly anticipated PC FPS Crysis and Football Manager 2008. According to BAFTA’s press release, the pre-release titles were played on test units in a secure room at BAFTA by every juror over a period of some five weeks.
A spokesperson for BAFTA told Pro-G that Microsoft declined to enter Halo 3 this year because they didn’t want the judges to play a half finished version of the game and, as it would have been a pre-release game, didn’t want to limit the game to two categories (a BAFTA rule on games submitted late in the year).
The move will disappoint some gamers who had hoped to see Halo 3, graphics monster Crysis, gruesome action adventure Gears of War and critically acclaimed FPS BioShock go head to head at the BAFTAs this year. Instead Microsoft’s big hope will have to contend with Metal Gear Solid 4 and GTA 4 in 2008.
This year’s Awards will include the publicly-voted PC World Gamers Award and a new BAFTA Ones To Watch Award in association with Dare to be Digital. To have your say visit www.obsessedwithgames.co.uk from October 3. The Awards ceremony will be held at Battersea Evolution in London on October 21.
