The three million figure has been reached in little more than a year and a half, and firmly places the franchise as one of the leading subscription free online role-playing games.

We are pleased to have reached the three million mark so swiftly,” commented Geoff Heath, CEO, NCsoft Europe. “The Guild Wars games have captured the imagination of players from across the globe and we are delighted by ArenaNet’s accomplishment.

ArenaNet has also announced details of the in-game Wintersday Festival, plus some new features scheduled to be implemented over the holiday season.

Wintersday 2006 is the latest special in-game event and will provide players with some festive cheer and holiday-themed quests. During the event, which runs from December 20, 2006, through January 2, 2007, players will find favourite outposts dressed with holiday décor, get invites to complete festive quests, partake in PvP snowball fights, and receive unique holiday rewards.

Two new features to be implemented over the holiday season are Party Search and Reconnect After Disconnect. They provide pretty much what they say on the tin: Party Search gives players the ability to more easily form groups, and Reconnect After Disconnect allows players dropped from the game to re-join within a ten minute period.
