Guild Wars 2 has sold more than three million copies in its first nine months of availability in Europe and North America, making it the “all-time fastest-selling MMORPG,” ArenaNet has said.
“After triangulating against multiple data sources, it’s clear that Guild Wars 2 is the fastest-selling Western MMO of all time based on the first nine months of availability,” said analyst David Cole of DFC Intelligence. “This puts Guild Wars 2 in an impressive position when they release in China, where we’ve seen similar franchises really take off.”
ArenaNet hasn’t included the sales of Blizzard’s World of Warcraft’s expansions, with Cataclysm shifting a staggering 3.3 million copies in just 24 hours back in December 2010. Previously, Wrath of the Lich King managed 2.8 million in just 24 hours.
A free trial has also been announced, with new players able to create an account and play from 08:00 BST Friday, August 23 to 07:59 BST Monday, August 26.
