Guild Wars 2 developers have stated ArenaNet is currently on alert for data security breaches in its MMORPG.

In an interview with IncGamers, Eric Flannum and John Peters said: “One of the things that we’ve done is we have a team who looks at that stuff and we have a lot of features that we think will help out with security.”

The pair stated it’s still too early to talk about its specific security measures, however they “understand having operated GW and seeing all the account theft that has happened. Obviously we’re hoping to shoot for accounts never being stolen, but there’s only so much you can do. At the moment though we’re not quite ready to talk about exactly what we’re doing.”

These remarks come after numerous user accounts were broken into, affecting both RIFT and Lord of the Rings Online.

Last March RIFT developer Trion hired additional security staff and were in the process of developing a “two-factor authentication process”, according to the game’s executive producer Scott Hartsman. Similarly, Codemasters implemented a Hacked Account Restart Program, which allows victims of hacked accounts restore character data in LOTRO. However it’s still unclear whether ArenaNet will be taking similar measures to these.
