MMOs are evolving in such a way that it’s likely we will see a major breakthrough for the genre on consoles within the next few years, according to Guild Wars 2 lead designer Eric Flannum.

Speaking to VideoGamer.com, Flannum detailed his thoughts on the future of the MMO industry, stating:

“I think the MMO market will continue to grow. I think we’ll see many single-player games integrating more MMO-like features while MMOs continue to explore new genres and platforms.

“I’d expect to see a large breakthrough MMO on console as well as on mobile platforms sometime in the next few years. At the same time, I really do hope we’ll see MMOs becoming more and more diverse on the PC and gaining a larger market there as well.”

Previously publisher NCsoft had said a console version of Guild Wars 2 was not out of the question, stating the firm is still “in the preparation stage” for the game, and while nothing has been finalised it is currently “looking at various options” for platforms.

So far there is no official release date for the subscription-less MMO, however its beta is expected to launch this month.

You’ll find more from Flannum in the complete Guild Wars 2 interview.
