Guerrilla has said that it was shocked to see concept art for Horizon: Zero Dawn leak online almost a year ahead of its official announcement, and was worried that without any explanation, it would “get slaughtered” by the community over the game’s concept.

“We were really surprised when the concept art leaked because we couldn’t really imagine how that could even happen,” art director Jan-Bart van Beek told VideoGamer.com at E3 earlier today. “So that was sort of a shock when it came out.

“It also became an interesting moment for the company because this is the first time that we’re showing it and of course without the explanation that I’ve just given you it looks absurd. Everyone is like, ‘Oh God, what’s going to happen now? They’re gonna see f*****g Vikings riding on T-rexes. Man, this is bizarre. We’re gonna get slaughtered.’ I think maybe there was a really positive response. A lot of people going, ‘Yeah, this is the reason why I play games. I get to see worlds like this, because I’m not going to see this in TV series or movies.'”

The first details on Horizon leaked online just prior to E3 2014, with concept art appearing on a Chinese forum last September.

The game was officially announced for PS4 on Tuesday with a release scheduled for 2016.
