Grand Theft Auto 6 was delayed to May 2026 earlier this year, and the Ghost of Yotei co-creative director has said it was a “great day” for the studio. GTA 6 was originally scheduled to come out in Fall 2025, presumably meaning October to December. While the delay is disappointing for millions of fans who have been waiting over a decade for the next Grand Theft Auto installment to come out, its delay was ultimately good news for every other publisher and developer planning to release at the tail end of this year.
GTA 6 delay was a “great day” says Ghost of Yotei director
Ghost of Yotei co-creative director, Nate Fox, recently conducted a 125-rapid fire questions interview with MinnMax. In the interview, Fox was asked, “When GTA 6 was delayed into 2026, did the entire studio [Sucker Punch] pop some champagne?”. Fox responded by acknowledging it was a “great day” while joking that everyone at the studio is “still hung over” from celebrating.
The elation of GTA 6’s delay isn’t surprising. There have previously been reports of Rockstar’s release being a “challenging disruption” keeping other publishers “up at night,” and recently industry veterans have remarked that the upcoming Grand Theft Auto is a “black cloud that looms over everything” because of how it competes with so many genres and interests. Sucker Punch are also not the first to jest about the delay of GTA 6 as at Gamescom 2025 Obsidian Entertainment joked that fans are getting an actual release date for The Outer Worlds 2 “Now that GTA 6 got pushed to the Spring”.
The release date for Ghost of Yotei is set for October 2nd, so we only have to wait less than a month for it to come out. So far, from all the trailers and previews, the game looks phenomenal, and even former PlayStation President, Shuhei Yoshida, has said it is “even better” than Ghost of Tsushima.
As for Grand Theft Auto, it is currently on course for May 26th, 2026. Take-Two Interactive’s CEO has said he is confident about this release date, however, there is always the prospect further delays can occur. If GTA 6 was to be delayed a second time into Fall 2026, it would be disappointing news for fans, but it would be even worse news for all the publishers and developers targeting that release window, believing they’ll be free of Rockstar’s heavy shadow.
In other GTA 6 news, Take-Two Interactive’s CEO has vowed that the game will “deliver more value” than its price.
