A lot of people are understandably worried about the future of everything with the advancement of AI. Regarding the video game industry, there was recently mass layoffs at Microsoft with the corporation investing heavily in Artificial Intelligence. It’s understandable that a lot of people are concerned about being replaced, but a GTA 6 artist believes that ultimately AI “can’t replace people” despite having “its uses”.

GTA 6 artist states AI “can’t replace people”

As spotted by Gamesradar, YouTuber Kiwi Talkz has conducted an interview with David O’Reily who previously worked at Rockstar Games as an environmental artist for GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and GTA 6 before leaving in 2023 due to burn out.

During the hour-long interview, David discussed a range of topics from their own work on GTA 6 to the advancements and concern surrounding AI. Regarding AI, David was asked about fellow former Rockstar developer, Obbe Vermeij, believing that GTA 6 will remain the most expensive game ever made because GTA 7 will involve a lot of jobs “taken over by AI whether we want it or not”. Vermeij said, “banks of artists that are just building like massive maps or massive cutscenes, I think some of that will be taken over by AI in the next five years or so”.

In contrast to Vermeij, David believes AI “can’t replace people,” even though it does “have its uses”. David said, “I think the benefit of AI is going to be in sort of automating the tedious tasks”. He elaborated, “I don’t think we’re anywhere near letting AI make good terrain. It might make you a broad first pass of something, but it’s not going to get you down to player level quality without so much handholding that you might as well do it yourself”.

David also said, “I think it’s power is probably going to be in veg placement… [and] stitching terrain in,” but “on RDR2, we had other systems to do that, so we were already moving away from hand wielding verts together into a more sort of projection approach”.

Ending the topic, David said, “I think AI can have its uses definitely, but it’s got to be in automating the tedious tasks that take a long time but are not really skilled jobs”. As for the “creation of quality environments,” David doesn’t know how AI could accomplish it as Artificial Intelligence tools such as Ghat GPT appear amazing at first, but underneath the surface they are actually “not that great” and “a lot of it is cr*p”.

Away from David, Take-Two Interactive CEO, Strauss Zelnick, previously said in February this year that he believes AI could increase employment rather than result in job losses. Per VGC, the Take-Two CEO said, “The bottom line is that these are digital tools and we’ve used digital tools forever. I have no doubt that what is considered AI today will help make our business more efficient and help us do better work, but it won’t reduce employment”.

In other GTA 6 news, a leaker claims “60fps is happening” while also teasing a post-launch “custom music mode”.
